The New Sarpaneva Moomin 80, a Fascinating Tale in Super-LumiNova

A magical pair of watches that beautifully captures the spirit of a favourite children's book.

If you have kids, you’re probably familiar with the Moomins – the lovely, hippo-shaped fairy tale characters created by Finnish author Tove Jansson. First introduced in 1945, these charming creatures have inspired everything from books and comic strips to TV series, films, and theme parks. Their whimsical world also caught the eye of Finnish watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva. Initially, he brought Moomins to life in character watches under his S.U.F. Helsinki brand. Later, he introduced Moomin to his signature Sarpaneva collection. Now, as the Moomins celebrate their 80th anniversary, Sarpaneva marks the occasion with a pair of special edition timepieces that beautifully capture this magic feeling in an artistic work of lume.

The Sarpaneva Moomin 80 editions are presented in the indie watchmaker’s signature case crafted from high-grade Outokumpu steel, measuring 46mm lug-to-lug, 42mm in diameter and 11.4mm thick. The Sarpaneva Moonface crown is positioned at 4 o’clock; the front sapphire crystal features multiple layers of AR coating, and the caseback is transparent to reveal the movement.

Observing the dial is a truly unique experience. The three-part construction beautifully recreates an illustration from Tove Jansson’s 1946 book Comet in Moominland, bringing the scene to life with a vivid night sky and a comet streaking overhead. Ten different Super-LumiNova colours illuminate the artwork, with the current hour revealed through an aperture at the top of the dial. Hours are displayed via a rotating disc with an aperture at 12 o’clock, while a two-toned, Super-LumiNova-treated hand indicates the minutes. The Sarpaneva Moomin 80 is available in two versions: a monochromatic dial, echoing the original black-and-white book print, or a vibrant coloured edition – both glowing brilliantly in the dark.

The Sarpaneva Moomin 80 is powered by a modified self-winding Soprod A10 calibre, running at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations/hour and offering a 42-hour power reserve. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the rhodium-plated movement is partially covered by a skeletonized steel winding mass with white gold weights featuring Sarpaneva’s signature Moonface.

For versatility, the commemorative Moomin 80 comes with a selection of coloured leather straps secured with a pin buckle. For those who prefer a bracelet, the steel Sarpaneva Moonbridge is available as an optional upgrade (at 2,500 euros). The watch is limited to 60 pieces, Sarpaneva will produce 30 with coloured dials and 30 in black and white. The price is EUR 13,500 excluding taxes. For more, visit sarpanevawatches.com.
